Biography/History The Ampion Club of San Diego began in 1893 with 25 members. In 1899, the Club decided to sponsor recitals by famous musical artists, promising musicians an audience and a high fee. From 1899 to 1948, the Amphion Club sponsored many recitals. As the entertainment industry changed, the need for the Amphion Club diminished. After the 1947-1948 season, the Club decided to end. Mrs. Jessie "Brownie" T. Buker, the compiler of this scrapbook, was Secretary-Treasurer of the Club for over 30 years. She was born in Illinois, arrived in San Diego in 1912, and joined the Amphion Club as Secretary-Treasurer in 1918. Mrs. Buker died in 1972 at the age of 98. Scope and Content One volume contains Amphion Club yearbooks from 1901 to 1948. Each year, the Amphion Club published these books containing information about the club, membership lists, and the expected concert schedule for that year. This specific volume also includes programs and newspaper clippings from some of the Amphion Club-sponsored performances and many of the pieces are corrected as to substitutions or cancellations. The other three volumes are composed of magazine clippings, generally from Musical America. These clippings include some of the Amphion Club guest artists, as well as famous figures of that time. None of the clippings are directly related to San Diego or the Amphion Club. Bulk Dates: c.1926-1927 |
