Originally housed in a three-ring plastic binder with transparent sleeves from Office Depot, this scrapbook was compiled by in 2009 by Carrie Beinert, Board Member of the Linda Vista Community Development Corporation. Contents consist of photocopied newspaper articles from 1942-1989, plans and drawings of the original shopping center, a one-page historical description of the shopping center written by Ms. Beinert, letters between Ms. Beinert and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, histories of Linda Vista, lists of local contributors to the 2009 bronze plaque, and color photos of the commemorative event. Transcripts of oral history interviews with George A. Scott (San Diego Historical Society, 1985), and with Melvin C. McKay (conducted by Carrie Beinert, 2009), are also included. Mr. McKay was an eye-witness to Eleanor Roosevelt's 1942 dedication of the shopping center. Introduction: "This Notebook contains information compiled by the Linda Vista Community Development Corporation to preserve the history of one of the first planned shopping centers in the United States. "The Linda Vista Shopping Center in San Diego, California, was one of the first planned shopping centers built by the government to serve the defense workers living in the Linda Vista Community during World War II and the only shopping center dedicated by a First Lady." |
