Abstract: This collection contains items related to the work of I. Andrea Hoffman Jackson, a sculptor and art writer in San Diego including a scrapbook on her body of work, interviews of local artists for her book, "San Diego Artists," and research materials on a number of Southern California art institutions, including San Diego Museum of Art. Biographical/Historical Notes: I. Andrea Hoffman Jackson was born in Los Angeles in 1946. She earned a Master’s degree in Art and Art History from San Diego State University, completed coursework for a doctorate in Art History at the University of Southern California, and studied art and sculpture in Italy. She has created numerous sculptures on public display in San Diego, including: the ‘Discus Thrower’ at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park, the ‘Children’s Wall’ at the Mandell Weiss City Park, M. Larry Lawrence Jewish Community Center, and a bronze portrait bust of Mandell Weiss at the Mandell Weiss Center for the Performing Arts at University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She also created a ceremonial mace of polished bronze with semi-precious stones for UCSD and the Roger Revelle Medal for Distinguished Service to UCSD. She continues to sculpt and returns every few years to Italy to work and study. Andrea is an accomplished writer and art critic, writing about artists, art exhibits, and current events in the art world. Her writing has been published under two bylines, I. Andrea and Andrea Hoffman, in publications such as Artweek, San Diego Magazine and The New York Post. From 1978 – 1979 she was a freelance writer for the Los Angeles Times and from 1979 – 1982 she was an art critic and feature writer for the San Diego Tribune. In 1988 she co-authored San Diego Artists, which featured interviews and profiles of more than fifty local artists. She also taught art, art history, and writing at San Diego State University. In 1988 Andrea earned a second Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the Professional School of Psychological Studies. She currently lives in the San Diego area where she sculpts and counsels at the San Diego Center for Children using Art Therapy. Scope and Content: This collection contains some of the personal papers, writings and research of I. Andrea Hoffman Jackson. The personal papers include her resume, portfolios, and photos and articles about her work. The collection’s bulk of writings and research opens with I. Andrea’s book, "San Diego Artists," including a copy transcript, research notes, and publisher correspondence. Also included is information on each of the fifty artists featured in the book, including resumes, biographies, notes, articles, brochures, news releases, and art images, as well as book chapter copies and interview transcripts for some artists. Additionally there is information about other San Diego-based artists that were not featured in the book. The collection also includes much of the research I. Andrea did while writing an article in 1981 on the San Diego Museum of Art called "The Great Brezzo Experiment." This research includes a wealth of information about the San Diego Museum of Art, including by-laws, policies, staff information, meeting minutes, inventory, and financial information. There is also some information about the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art (now the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego) as well as some documents, brochures and clippings from other art institutions around the country. |
