Scope & Content |
Titled "Pictorial Record of Baja California Mission Sites", this scrapbook was compiled and written by Howard E. Gulick and presented to the "Junipero Serra Museum of the San Diego Historical Society" in December 1952. Labeled and numbered b&w photos of 31 missions make up the majority of the scrapbook. Photos are glued onto black construction paper and labeled by number with a short description caption. Eight single-spaced typewritten pages precede the photos and include sections titled, "Explanatory Remarks"; "Location Map - Missions of Baja California Mexico"; and two detailed lists labeled, "Historical Outlines of Missions of Baja California" (1697-1834) and "Notes on Mission Sites of Baja California". Missions in "Historical Outlines" are listed chronologically by date established and note the religious order, beginning with the Jesuit establishment of the Nuestra Senora de Loreto Concho in 1697. The Franciscan establishment of San Fernando de Valicata in 1769 by Junipero Serra is among those listed. Missions are further identified by the name of the establishing priest (such as Serra) and keyed numerically to accompanying photos. A column with "Remarks" provides brief notes for each mission. "Notes on Mission Sites" provides a numerically organized key to the 31 photos contained in the scrapbook. Each is labeled with the "modern name of sites" (i.e., Descanso, Loreto, etc.), "full name of mission", and "present condition of buildings at site". |
