Online comment by Donna Hayes - December 31, 2013 This is one of many many photos Mr. Baynard took of my sister Daphne Grace Hayes who was an award winning well known competition Baton Twirler in San Diego County. She was the only African American competition twirler in California for most of her career. This particular photograph was taken in our home on Payne Street in Logan Heights. It shows Daphne in a typical baton twirler's pose in front of one of her many trophy cases. Over her competitive career she won over 500 trophies and 50 medals. She was an award winning Majorette for Patrick Henry High School from 1971 to 1974 and won all top high school marching band majorette titles in San Diego County including the Maytime Band Review. She was a Majorette for the San Diego State University Aztec Marching Band from 1974 to 1978, as well as twirling for the San Diego Chargers and the San Francisco 49er's. San Diego State sent her to Malaga, Spain in 1976 where she won the World Collegiate Majorette title. Mr. Baynard for over 15 years had one photograph or another of my sister Daphne displayed in the window of his studio on Imperial Avenue to advertise his business. She began competition twirling at age 6. My late father Edgar J. Hayes and my late grandfather J.C. Lee loved having pictures taken of her over the years in one of her over 70 competition costumes. The Baynard collection has many more photos of Daphne. |
